As a primary teacher, you can play an essential role in children’s development. You’ll make a lasting, positive impact on children’s well-being and creativity, opening young minds to new concepts through rich and practical learning experiences, expanding their natural curiosity. Giving children the building blocks to provide firm foundations for lifelong learning.

You need to be able to work with a range of people from parents and teachers to professionals from other services and members of the community. You need to be energetic, creative, have a thirst for learning, love the outdoors whatever the weather and be practical in your delivery.

Trainees who are undertaking the Primary 3-7 programme will train with our 5-11 Primary and our Primary with SEND trainees and will receive specialist input from colleagues working in the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key stage 1, through to Key Stage 2.

Our partners

The KTSA has many primary partners allowing you to experience a wide range of educational contexts. Our primaries are in rural, coastal and urban settings and include academy chains, multi academy trusts, faith schools, infant schools and junior schools, EYS and KS1 only settings and KS2 settings and a through school KS2 – 5. In fact if there is a type of setting or leadership structure that you wish to experience you will find it within our alliance partners.

The programme will allow you to spend time in two main placements both different in their context and size. There will also be opportunities to visit other primary settings and our secondary, FE and HE, alternative provision and special school partners.

Our current school direct trainees have already found themselves in the classroom, on the beach and receiving training in at least 4 different school settings. They have had the opportunity to attend Ofsted training, Guided reading and writing, First Aid, Child Protection and Assessment for Learning

Entry requirements

We closely adhere to the entry requirements for Primary PGCE courses. Please note that The University of Exeter has a general requirement of a degree classification of Upper Second (2:1) a 2:2 is applicable in some situations.


The programme will allow you to spend time in 2/3 placements, these placements will be in EYFS and Key stage 1. The schools will be different in their context .

There will be a main placement of in terms 1 & 3 in KS1 or EYFS and a second placement in term 2. There will be time for trainees to experience other settings and key stages in the final term.

Our aim is for all of our trainees to be successful and with that in mind we take into consideration each individuals personal situation and endeavour to place them so that they have no more than a 40 minute journey to work.

1. Applicants with a degree from outside the UK should refer to the equivalency table to see if their degree is likely to attract a bursary, or should consult their chosen training provider.
2. Trainee teachers on primary mathematics courses, with at least a B at A level in mathematics (or equivalent), will be eligible

Graduates with a 2:1 and above, who are passionate about their subject and have the potential to be inspirational teachers can apply for a scholarship with the appropriate professional body. As well as the financial award, scholars will receive a package of additional benefits provided by the professional bodies.

Trainees with a 2:2 may be awarded a scholarship in exceptional circumstances, if they have significant relevant experience.
Trainees awarded a scholarship cannot receive a bursary. Trainees who aren’t awarded a scholarship are eligible for a standard bursary.
