Support for Trainees

"You have just been so supportive throughout and without your friendly and happy faces, life as a trainee teacher would have been scarier. We always strive to create a safe environment for our children in class, but I realised that we, as adults, need this feeling to grow and develop as well."         (Trainee 2022-2023)

We understand that the teacher training year is a busy one and we also appreciate that everyone's home circumstances are different. KITE and the NIoT are committed to ensuring that trainees are supported throughout the year on both a personal and professional level. Because we are a small cohort, we get to know our trainees well and have the time and expertise to support everyone on an individual level.

Support provided by KITE and the NIoT:

School support: a multi-layered support network designed to support trainees physical and mental health and well-being. All colleagues who work with trainees are trained and welcome the opportunity to be a coach and mentor.

Training session: trainees will engage in weekly sessions at the KITE training centre which will help individuals to develop and master the skills and knowledge needed to be a confident and competent teacher.

Regular contact with KITE Programme Lead: the KITE programme lead will be available during all taught sessions and is always at the end of the phone or email!

Visits: each half term, a colleague from KITE visits the trainee in their placement to ensure that they have settled in, are making good progress and are being well-supported.

Personalised support: this could include additional coaching and mentoring by a colleague in school or a KITE tutor, 1:1 meetings, pastoral check-ins and how to manage workload.

Academic support: includes support with academic writing and study skills.

Applying for jobs: all trainees will receive training on how to apply for jobs, support for writing personal statements and interview techniques. In addition, all individuals will be invited for a mock interview and receive feedback on their personal statement.

Tailored support for: neurodiverse trainees and those who are registered disabled or who have additional needs.
